UHWI Says Thanks

The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), has thanked all who contributed to a project to have the hospital’s ring road rehabilitated, at a cost of more than $80 million.

The four-week project, which was managed by the National Works Agency (NWA), was completed on time at the end of March.

In an interview with JIS News, Medical Chief of Staff of the UHWI, Dr. Trevor McCartney, said the hospital is grateful to President of the Port Authority of Jamaica, Professor Gordon Shirley, “for his leadership and handling of this novel private sector co-operation with public entities.”

He explained that Professor Shirley had been asked by Minister of Transport, Works and Housing, Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies, to head a committee to source funding for the project.

“The ring road had been in a poor state for a long time, in spite of frequent repairs. An assessment was carried out by the NWA and it was determined that the damage to the substructure was such that continued patching would be futile,” he said.

Contributions came from organizations, including the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica, Surrey Paving and Aggregates, McKenzie Quarry, Da Costa Construction, Build Rite Construction, General Paving, Dwight’s Construction, Y.P. Seaton & Associates, Chin’s Construction and Jamaica Pre-Mix & Aggregates Ltd.

Also donating were Tank Weld Metals, Coast to Coast Quarries, Carib Cement, S&G Road Surfacing, Sherwin Williams Ltd., Diamond Paints, Jamaica Public Service, National Water Commission, Gleaner Company Ltd., Jamaica Observer, University of the West Indies, Jamaica Constabulary Force, and the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation.
